General FAQs

I see R-Value quite a bit. What does it mean?

R-Value is a measurement for how well your doors regulate the internal temperature of your garage. The higher the R-Value, the more effective your door is at regulating the temperature of your garage. For a homeowner in a cold-weather climate, with an insulated or heated garage, we recommend a door with a minimum R-Value of 11. R-14 to R-16

What if I don’t have enough headroom?

Headroom is a measurement of the distance from the top of the door to the lowest point of the ceiling, or obstruction from above. If headroom is an issue for you, Door Systems offers several low headroom solutions.

Can I fix my doors myself?

Although our doors are built to last, some parts do occasionally wear out over time. If you are handy and follow the instructions in your installation manual, you can manage some of the repairs yourself. Some of the parts that you may be able to repair include rollers, bottom seal, hinges, lift handles, windows and window inserts.

However, we strongly recommend that replacing springs, door sections, tracks and operators be handled by an overhead door professional.

How much headroom do I need above the opening for my overhead doors to work correctly?

We recommend a minimum of 12” clearance for residential garage doors. For standard commercial jobs, we recommend at least 20”.

Do I need a floor in place to install my garage doors?

While a floor isn’t required for installation, it is strongly recommended.

When referring to steel gauge, does a lower number mean thicker steel?

The lower the gauge, the thicker (and stronger) the steel. For example, 24-gauge steel is thicker than 27-gauge steel. However, a “sandwich” constructed door with two 27-gauge steel skins bonded to an insulated core is stronger than a “steel frame” door with a single 24-gauge steel skin.

Can I improve the energy efficiency of my facility without major upgrades?

Absolutely, you have several options. Dock seals and shelters are a low cost way to create effective seals between trucks and your facilities, saving you in energy costs. High speed doors can reduce the amount of hot or cold air entering your facility. Insulated doors keep internal temperatures more regulated.

Residential FAQs

I am building a new garage, what size should I create the opening for my doors?

We recommend choosing your doors first, and then you can construct your opening so that the finished opening is the same size as the doors you purchased. That way you get the perfect fit!

How do I buy a garage door from Door Systems?

Our website is not set up for online purchasing simply because, often, the door buying process can be nuanced, and costs may vary depending on your needs. When you’re ready to begin the process, give us a call today. We’re eager to help you get started!

Can my garage doors be painted?

Yes, many of our residential garage doors can be painted. See your owner’s manual for instructions on how to paint your doors. We also have powder-coating options available

Which type of garage doors should I buy?

That all depends on what you want and need. Steel doors are the most popular because they are maintenance-free, durable, and cost effective. Real wood doors are more attractive, but require much more upkeep.

Can I replace a section of my door, if only one section is damaged? Or do I need to replace the whole door?

It is possible to replace just one section of your garage door in some cases. However, if the damage is bad enough, the entire door may need to be replaced. Contact your local Door Systems office to evaluate your situation and make recommendations for the best solution.
